Original, Not Retro

The Summaron-M is based on a screw mount lens originally produced at the Leitz factory in Wetzlar between 1955 and 1963. Its distinctive image rendering – virtually impossible to replicate digitally – makes this lens a true classic. The original optical formula remains unchanged in the new edition, preserving its iconic character. Yet it is immediately apparent that the Summaron-M is no mere replica: its design has been pared back to the essentials, yet retains the character of its iconic predecessor.

In Commemoration of Craftsmanship

The lens hood evokes the early era of rangefinder photography. Not only its design, but also the intricate manufacturing process has been carried over from the historical Summaron model. The lens hood is initially milled from solid brass before being shaped through a precision bending process. As part of this process, numerous grooves are machined into the interior of the lens hood.

Perfect for Street Photography

The Summaron is the smallest M-System lens. Measuring less than 2 cm in length, it is strikingly discreet – making it perfectly suited to street photography. The clear depth-of-field scale, combined with generous adjustment angles, enables accurate pre-focusing. Alternatively, the broad depth of field facilitates spontaneous hyperfocal photography from the hip, enabling the photographer to respond to subjects faster than with any autofocus system.

Design of the Summaron-M 28 f/5.6

Six lenses arranged in four groups form a symmetrical design that faithfully reflects the historical model. By contrast, however, the current model features the M-Bayonet with 6-bit coding, enabling communication between camera and lens. Its close focus distance is 1 metre. The all-metal lens housing features a traditional distance scale and a focusing rod. Each Summaron-M is crafted in Wetzlar and features the classic screw mount for the round lens hood. A technical work of art in miniature form.
